Weekly Open Thread: What Races Are You Interested In?

It’s been a long week for all of us, so let’s kick back and take a breather tonight with another caption contest.  Let’s see what you can come up with for this recent photo taken of Alabama Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks (far right):

  1. I just got back from a house party for MI-09 candidate Gary Peters. People in the district are excited about the opportunity to finally defeat Joe Knollenberg. If you thought 2 terms of Bush was bad, try 8 terms of Knollenberg!

Gary has strong progressive credentials, but you can read about him at PetersForCongress.com

However it wasn’t his record that won me over to supporting him. It was going to Yearly Kos with him and seeing how deeply he cares about the issues we are facing. He made sure we went to the “Your Money or Your Life” session, where he took pages of notes. I’ve never been more honored or excited to volunteer for a candidate as I was walking out of that session and discussing Healthcare with Gary. He deeply cares about these issues, and has the legislative experience to make an impact.

We’ve seen a swell of support recently on ActBlue! Gary has broken $40,000 with over 150 unique contributors. Send a message before the quarter ends on Sep30…Support Gary Peters at ActBlue!

  2. PA-06 fake moderate Republican Jim Ger-lackluster still lacks a challenger.  Let’s draft Dan Wofford, the 2002 nominee, who held Ger-lackluster to a 51% – 49% margin, to make another run in a district that is bluer today than when Wofford ran in 2002.

    1. I am a precinct committee person within the district, and rumor has it from my town’s campaign manager that there is a person ready to jump in but is waiting until after the November local elections before announcing due to a decent chance of taking Montgomery County Courthouse and an outside chance at the Chester County Courthouse, and not to mention decent chances in some of the towns throughout the district as well.  Unfortunately I do not know who this mystery person is so take this as you wish.
That being said I think Andy Dinniman would have the best chance of winning, but I am kinda greedy here and would rather him stay in the state senate.  But Wofford is also from Chesco I believe and I think having someone with a base in Chesco or Berksco is  potentially the most important aspect to finding a winner

  3. Are on the DSCC  mailing list and have seen the one from Paul Newman. Most of these are your standard give us money so we can help elect democrats to the senate. What struck me about this particular one was that they talked about gettin 60 seats. I’d never seen any e-mail from the DSCC lay out this goal.

I know we have 6 pickup opportunities where I’d say it was at worst a toss-up or a very slight republican lean. And while everyone expects John Kennedy to jump into the Senate race, he still hasn’t and stranger things have occurred than him passing on this race. So at this point the GOP has 0.

I know the Dems feel like they have a number of “sleeper” states where the incumbents are tarred in some way whether through corruption charges or poor approval ratings. States like North Carolina, Texas, Oklahoma, Alaska. I’ve kind of given up on Kerrey so I’m basically calling Nebraska safe-GOP. I think Grier Martin’s entry would give Dems a decent shot at Dole, but I’d be very surprised if Dems won even one of those 4 seats, much less 3.

  4. This week I’ve been reading the CQ rankings and realizing that in nearly all of the races on their radar screen, we have great, progressive candidates I’d be thrilled to see in Congress. Jon Powers, Darcy Burner, Vic Wulsin, Charlie Brown, and John Unger are all particular favorites.

    1. now I’m gonna cover your jugs in syrup.”

How to lose your job as Agriculture Commissioner in one sentence.

  5. Harrison is expected to announce ~ $50k in fund raising and pledges (with $4.5k left over from 2006).  All in all that should be about $40k in actual fund raising in 7 weeks of announcing his candidacy, most coming in the past few weeks.

Recchia has not announced his candidacy so there will be no FEC filings this quarter for comparisons.

  6. The Democrats in serious danger of losing this very Democratic seat in an October 16th special election.  Niki Tsongas’ internal polls show her up by only single digits.  Losing this race would kill Democrats.

  7. State Senator Richard Young quit the Indiana Gov’s race today,  saying he could not raise enough $$.  He did not endorse either of the two remaining major candidates.  I’ll admit I don’t know too much about him, but he is a very well respected insider within the party.  He’d be a solid choice for either Schellinger or Long-Thompson to consider for LG (they run on a ticket here), as he’s especially well known in Southern Indiana (he took over Frank O’Bannon’s seat in the State Senate 20 years ago when O’Bannon became LG).  The southern part of the state is the one region that still often votes for regional candidates, and he’d bring some appeal in the area for either Schellinger (from Indianapolis) or Long-Thompson (for the northern part of the state).

  8. Is there are credible candidate against McCotter? His district isn’t crazy right-leaning, he didn’t break 55 last time, and we’re going to be kicking ass in Michigan this year. Why I ask, see, is this RedState post, which I find very irritating.

  9. Santorum eyes gubernatorial bud

    Sunday, September 30, 2007  – Pittsburgh Tribune

Say it slowly: Gov. Rick Santorum.
    Interesting concept, isn’t it?

The former Pennsylvania GOP senator, trounced in his re-election bid last year by seldom-seen Democrat Bob Casey Jr., apparently has grown weary of beating the drums about the ongoing terrorist threat as a senior fellow with the Washington-based Ethics and Public Policy Center.

The American Spectator reported last week that Santorum is seriously mulling a run for governor in 2010, when the race will be wide open. Term limits will force current Gov. Ed Rendell from seeking a third term.

Said one unnamed political adviser in The Spectator item: “Rick is a politician. He loves the competition and the process of running. He’s getting back in and he’s young enough that a gubernatorial run would set him up for greater opportunities politically down the road.”
Of course, a Santorum gubernatorial bid is dependent on the Virginia resident being agreeable to actually living in Pennsylvania again. When he was a senator, you may recall, he found that idea abhorrent.

  10. Regula is in his 80’s probally at the age of retirement.
Democrats have fielded the best candidate. State Sen John Boccieri- USAir Force Reserve Officer.
    The District is Competive.
